Josh McDaniels Head Back To Foxborough As Patriots OC

Josh McDaniels back in New England as Patriots Offensive Coordinator

Josh McDaniels: A Recurring Character In New England

Josh McDaniels, a familiar face in New England, is set to make a grand return. The Patriots are bringing him back as their offensive coordinator under head coach Mike Vrabel, a role he has held twice before. This news was reported by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport on Tuesday.

McDaniels’ return to New England comes after a brief and unsuccessful stint as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. His tenure there lasted less than two seasons, with a record of 9-16 before he was shown the door midseason in 2023.

Before his Raiders debacle, McDaniels was highly regarded as the offensive coordinator for the Patriots during the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick era. His first stint as offensive coordinator began in 2006, and in 2007, he orchestrated a record-setting offense for a Patriots team that nearly achieved an undefeated season and a Super Bowl victory.

After his initial three-year run with the Patriots, McDaniels was hired as head coach of the Denver Broncos, a position he held for two seasons. He then returned to Foxborough in 2012, where he resumed his role as offensive coordinator, guiding the Brady-led offense to remarkable success.

Under McDaniels’ leadership, the Patriots’ offense ranked in the top five in points for seven consecutive seasons (2012-2018). During that span, the Patriots captured three Super Bowl titles, further solidifying their dominance in the NFL.

McDaniels’ New England Focus: Developing Drake Maye

In his new role with the Patriots, McDaniels’ primary objective will be to cultivate quarterback Drake Maye. Maye, who enters his second season, showcased promising potential in his rookie year, throwing for 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He has drawn comparisons to a future franchise quarterback.

McDaniels has a proven track record of working with young quarterbacks. He successfully guided Mac Jones to his best season in the NFL during Jones’ rookie year with the Patriots in 2021.

McDaniels’ return to New England is a welcome addition to the Patriots’ coaching staff. His experience and expertise will be invaluable as they aim to rebuild their offense and contend for another Super Bowl title.
