King suffered a shoulder injury during spring practice and missed the remainder of the spring. He has been participating in limited practice this summer, but Key said he is still being evaluated by the team’s medical staff.
“He’s been doing well,” Key said of King. “He’s getting closer to being 100%. We’re just going to take it day-by-day and see how he progresses.”
If King is unable to play, Georgia Tech has two backup quarterbacks who are ready to step in. Jeff Sims, a former four-star recruit, started 12 games for the Yellow Jackets last season, while Zach Pyron, a transfer from Baylor, has impressed the coaching staff this summer.
Despite the injury to King, Key is optimistic about the Yellow Jackets’ chances this season.
“We have a lot of talent on this team,” Key said. “We’re going to be competitive, and we’re going to surprise some people.”
