Iowa Hawkeyes Coach Brutally Rips Into Team After UCLA Loss
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa Hawkeyes football coach Kirk Ferentz unleashed a torrent of criticism upon his team following their demoralizing 38-13 defeat to the UCLA Bruins on Saturday.
Ferentz Unleashes Fury
In a scathing post-game press conference, Ferentz excoriated his players for their lackluster performance, calling it “the worst I’ve seen in my 23 years here.”
“We were out-executed, out-coached, and out-muscled tonight,” Ferentz seethed. “This is a disgrace to this program and to the fans who support us.”
Offensive Woes
The Hawkeyes offense, once a bastion of stability, was rendered ineffective against the UCLA defense. Quarterback Spencer Petras struggled mightily, completing just 10 of 20 passes for 128 yards and an interception.
“Our offense was anemic tonight,” said Ferentz. “We had no rhythm, no tempo, and no execution. It’s embarrassing.”
Defensive Collapse
The Iowa defense, typically a stout unit, was equally culpable in the debacle. UCLA running back Zach Charbonnet gashed the Hawkeyes for 163 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
“We got pushed around tonight,” Ferentz lamented. “Our defense was soft, and we gave up big plays far too easily.”
Future Outlook
With the loss, Iowa’s season has taken a precipitous turn. The Hawkeyes, who were ranked 18th in the preseason, are now 1-2 and facing an uphill battle to salvage their campaign.
“We have a lot of work to do,” Ferentz said. “We need to find out who is willing to fight and who is not. The guys who don’t want to be here can go find another program.”
The Hawkeyes will look to rebound next week when they host the FCS-level South Dakota State Jackrabbits.
